At the end of a long working day, we all want to relax, and the first thing that comes to our mind is lying on a couch and watch television.
But sadly, we are living in those times where television content is becoming highly boring and repetitive. And those advertisements, I must say they are annoying! To make it worse, the high-decibel experts on TV have an opinion on everything and anything.
But anyways, after a long day, I prefer to read an easy breezy fiction to soothe and calm my mind but also to make me laugh and lift my spirits.
After jostling in the city metro, I want to curl up with a good book with a strong cup of coffee.
I want to read about margaritas, sun-kissed beaches, parties, sisters, friends, high heels, soft kisses, and cuddles.
This type of genre is popularly known as ‘chick lit’ and is considered cringe-worthy in the literary circles. When I tell my colleagues about my late night indulgences, they raise eyebrows.
Why should I feel ashamed about reading about urban women and the day to day challenges she faces whether it’s about infidelity or sibling rivalry or a budding office romance. Who doesn’t want to read about some chirpy girlie talk, a sizzling brownie recipe, and a goofy dog?
Now tell me what is wrong reading these issues? Are these issues less important than who will land on which planet first? Seriously, who can resist the magic of the beautiful covers of the contemporary women based fiction?
So, to all my intellectual friends, reading chick lit will not make me dim-witted and less smart than you all.
And to tell you my little secret, I want to be a Chick Lit Goddess one day. I want to write sunny, light, witty and entertaining chick lit novels someday. It’s my dream to admire young women ready my stories on metros, beaches, and airports.
But that’s a long way to go.
I have compiled a list of chick lit authors to look out for who will sizzle and drizzle your hopes, desires, smiles, and fantasies:
- Sophie Kinsella
Kinsella is a British financial journalist turned author. She is best known for penning Shopaholic series around a young woman who cannot manage her finances and is a compulsive buyer. The stories revolve around the complications that arise because of this habit.
She creates distinct, lovable and funny characters in her signature humorous style. She weaves her stories around family, office and relationships issues and sprinkles them with amusing and laughable moments.
She also writes standalone novels such as The Undomestic Goddess and My Not so Perfect Life. They are delightful with cheesy one-liners and make for an enjoyable read. She has never disappointed me. Pick up one her books from Shopaholic series or standalone for a relaxed and funny reading.

2. Marian Keyes
Marian Keyes is a successful Irish novelist and studied law and accountancy. She never thought she could write and started writing short stories in 1993 “out of the blue.”
Till date, she has written novels: Watermelon, Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married, Rachel’s Holiday, Last Chance, Anybody out There and The Woman Who Stole my Heart.
Her stories deal with modern ailments such as addiction, depression, domestic violence in a compassionate, humorous and positive manner. She is also considered the queen of urban romances.
Lucy Sullivan is Getting Married is my current favorite. It is a story of a young woman who is unlucky in love and stuck in a dead-end job. Her visit to a fortune teller will change everything. Next on my reading list is Anybody Out There by the same author.

3. Emily Griffin
Emily is an American lawyer turned author who has penned chick lits such as Something Blue, Baby Proof, Love the One You’re With, Heart of the Matter, Where We Belong and The One & Only. She is known as the modern-day Jane Austen who pens sharp but beautifully etched stories.

- Jane Green
Green is a former journalist in the UK and a graduate of the French Culinary Institute and now a prolific writer.
Some of her best work includes The Beach House, Second Chance, Jemina J, Tempting Fate and The Sunshine Sisters.
She writes sensitive and insightful family stories for modern women who look for both connection and escape. Her books are always warm, wise and delightful. I am currently reading Sunshine Sisters that presents a glittering tale of a mother and her three daughters.

- Debbie Macomber
Macomber is a very famous American author who has written extensively on life compelling relationships that embrace family and friendships. She is an incredibly real writer, and her stories are full of hope. You will surely make a lifelong and enduring connection with her characters. She is my favorite ‘holiday season’ writer and intricately carves her stories. Her writing style is effortless and smooth. Her characters are unpretentious and soothing.
I bet you will pick up start craft after reading her. Her Cedar Cove Series is my favorite. Her book covers are stunning.

- Cecilia Ahern
Cecilia is an Irish novelist who has written P.S. I Love You, Thanks for the memories, A place called Here. Her books have strong characters with real-life solutions to genuine problems with a touch of fantasy.
